Give me a vintage 12 string Gibson and a solid gold plectrum and I still couldn't play it any better than a kazoo. Art is not just visual but it is always communion, communicative, communist; always seeking to impress, oppress, express.

Elegant code or 'beautiful' theoretical physics have nothing to do with art. These are examples of science, of measurement, of calculation. They may only evoke admiration or wonder in cognoscenti. They are incapable of provoking widespread anger or sorrow or love in an average society - at least not directly.

The tools of the artist may be the most common available, such as the spoken word; or the most sophisticated, such as computer guided holography; but they always convey universal emotion when used to produce great art.

Would you rather receive communion or give communion?

So ? That doesn't invalidate them as art. Here's an example : The South Indian classical dance form, Bharat Natyam, reuires almost as much knowledge on the part of the audience as the performer to be enjoyed as it is meant to be - it's quirky, complex, full of nuance and allusion. So it's not art ?

I would tend to think that the realm of "art" is where you consider form, not function.
